Safety Training and Working At Heights
The Alpha-Beta Communications Group Inc. is a well-established Ottawa communications company that has been in business since the early nineties. During those years we have expanded our operation, diversified, worked overseas and have become experts in many areas related to the wireless communications industry. With many years of experience working at heights, from erecting communication towers, steel smoke stacks, antennas and communication accessories to working on water towers, high-rise apartment buildings and helicopter installation on a mountain top, it was but a small step to teaching courses in tower climbing, safety training, commercial rigging and hoisting, as well as teaching courses on safety standards and the applicable code requirements governing this industry. We have written a Fall Protection Program that is now being used by the federal government. It details applicable regulations, standards and the pre-requisites for working at heights. Our many years of practical experience climbing and working on towers has made us an authority on safe rigging, hoisting and accident prevention. Our riggers have never lost a single day of work to rigging or climbing related accidents.
Communication towers and sites are federally regulated and therefore are subject to the provisions of the Canada Labour Code, Part II. We teach courses and/or provide training for employees in federally regulated environments and industries where working at heights takes place. Our seminars and workshops explain the corporate responsibilities under the Canada Labour Code and other regulations to middle and upper management so that proper policies and procedures can be implemented. This is of particular importance since the Canadian Criminal Code was amended through the implementation of Bill C-45, an initiative that was based on the findings of the Westray coal mine disaster of May 9, 1992 in Nova Scotia. Bill C-45 received Royal assent in 2003 and allows for the criminal prosecution of corporate employees if they are found to have either wilfully circumvented safety provisions or mechanism that were in place for the safety of their employees, or failed to implement those safety mechanism or provisions that should have been in place to safeguard the employees in the first place. Lack of proper training when working at heights, improper use of climbing equipment, harnesses, lanyards and accessories and substandard supervision all form part of safety violations. Should an accident occur, officers or employees of a corporation could be held criminally responsible for those work-place related injuries.
We provide the theory portion of our Tower Safety Training and Climbing - Working at Heights course at your location and we try to arrange access to a communication tower nearby to facilitate the practical on-site climbing.
